Dolores Smith Obituary

Dolores Smith

Dolores Smith   July 17, 1935 – July 31, 2019

Dolores Marie (Barrett) Smith, 84, of Newport, OR passed away peacefully on July 31, 2019.  Dolores was born July 17, 1935 in Sioux Falls, SD to Laurence and Irene (Fenner) Barrett.  She graduated from Cathedral High School in 1953.  Late in the year of 1957, she met the love of her life, Eugene Paul Smith, while working in a hospital in Sioux Falls where he was a patient.  They married on June 5, 1958.

Eugene and Dolores owned a ranch outside of Highmore, SD.  On this ranch, they raised 7 children.  Dolores had several large gardens from which she fed her family.  She had beautiful flower gardens that she tended to.  She enjoyed reading, taking walks around the ranch and doing jigsaw puzzles.  She had a passion for all animals.  Dolores sewed many quilts throughout the years and sewed her children’s clothes when they were younger.  She enjoyed photography and researching genealogy with her sister, Janet.  She always made birthdays and Christmas very special for her children and grandchildren.

In August of 1987, Dolores and Eugene followed their dream and moved to Newport, Oregon for their retirement. They enjoyed taking their dogs for walks and exploring the different beaches in the area.  For a while Dolores was a volunteer with the Lincoln County Food Share.  She was a member of TOPS where she met some precious friends.

Dolores was preceded in death by her husband Eugene, father Laurence Barrett, mother Irene (Fenner) Barrett, and only sister Janet (Barrett) Henjum.  Grateful for having had her in their life are her daughters:  Bonnie Smith (Bill Grimm) of Lebanon, OR; Sarah Smith of Newport, OR; Rachel Smith of Pierre, SD; and Monique Lee (Sam) of Watsonville, CA; and sons:  Dan (Melanie) Smith of Okeechobee, FL, Martin (Nancy) Smith of Sharpsburg, GA, and Jesse Smith of Durant, OK; 11 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private family memorial was held.
