Robbie Schoonover Obituary

Robbie Lou Schoonover (Fiero) passed away after a heroic battle against cancer on January 27th, 2018. She was 84 years young. She was born February 10, 1933 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Long Beach, California, to Harry and Marie Fiero. She graduated Newport Harbor High School in Newport Beach California in 1950, and later graduated with an AA degree from Orange Coast Community College in 1952, and a BA from Long Beach State University in 1955. She went on to teach 1st grade at Tumwater Elementary School in Tumwater, Washington and later taught 3rd grade at Corona del Mar Elementary School, in California. She was involved with Girl Scouts for more than 35 years.
Wildly creative and fearless, Robbie acted in, or directed more than 100 plays. Her greatest love was the theater and she demonstrated this by being a member of several theater groups, Costa Mesa Playhouse, One of Us Productions, as well as the Porthole Players, and Red Octopus. She sewed, sang, danced and projected her trademark voice in theaters in Oregon and California. She was voted top actress by the Orange County Theatrical Association, and Woman of the Year in 1984 in Orange County, California.
She was instrumental in revitalizing the Yachats Arts & Crafts Show. She designed and created several banners in and around Yachats, Oregon area.
She got a kick out of planning menus and cooking for large groups including the Yachats “Lunch Bunch”.
And oh, how she could sew! From making matching outfits for a dog and a little girl, elaborate costumes, beautiful and intricate quilts, to custom banners and flags through her Newport Beach, California business, Nikki’s Flag Shop. She made banners for Ringling Bros, as well as one-of-a-kind flags for many celebrities and well-known mariners in the Newport Beach area. She owned and operated several creative businesses in Southern California including Nikki’s Flag shop, The Green Umbrella, and The Red Bobbin.
She is survived by her husband of 65 Years, George Schoonover, her son Marc Schoonover, her daughters Kim Jasmin Thissell, and Lynn Rea, as well as her grandchildren Christopher Jasmin, Adam Rea and Ryan Rea, and great-grandson, George Jasmin. She was a loving wife, a nurturing and loving mother who gave wonderful hugs, and a great friend to so many. She will be deeply missed.
