Sara Mae Dunham, 1922-2018
Sara Mae Dunham (Himes) was born to Vera Gertrude Pierson and John C. Himes on October 16, 1922 in Marshalltown, Iowa and was Promoted to Glory on December 24, 2018.
She had a healthy childhood until she was around 7 years old when she contracted Polio. Despite the fact she couldn’t walk due to the ravages of Polio and was told that she would never have children, Sara fought her way back to health and not only walked again but went on to have three healthy children of her own.
Sara was proceeded in death by siblings: Katherine, Francis, Merle and John C., Jr. and her husband Floyd Samuel Dunham. They were married for 63 years.
She is survived by her brother Gary, three children; JoAnne Johnson, Korkie Tague and David Dunham, her 14 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
Sara was a long-time member of The Salvation Army Corps and became a Soldier in 1977. She served in leadership capacities in numerous Corps and was invaluable to many Corps Commanding Officers. She served as Corps Sergeant-Major for over 20 years at the Newport Corps.
Sara worked in retail and bookkeeping most of her life and used her skills and abilities to help anyone in need.
A celebration of life service will be held at The Salvation Army Corps at 140 NE 4th Street, Newport, OR 97365 on Thursday, January 17, 2019 at 6:00PM. Refreshments and fellowship to follow.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Salvation Army Newport Corps Music Fund, 140 NE 4th Street, Newport, OR 97365.
