Herbert Leroy Jones was born December 29, 1935 at home, as the first child of Harold Leroy (Bud) and Mary Gwendolyn (Gwen) Jones on the Upper Nestucca River near Blaine, Oregon, 5 miles east of Beaver. He graduated from Nestucca High School in Cloverdale, OR in 1953 and then attended Oregon Technical Institute in Klamath Falls. He was a member of the National Guard. His nephew, Dalton Jones, is a current member of the Guard in Kentucky, which made Herb very proud.
Herb and Eloise raised their daughter, Koreen with her brothers Kevin and Karlin in the Newport area. Herb’s childhood dream was to be a truck driver, he fulfilled his dream and drove many trucks, including for Georgia Pacific for many years-with a very safe driving record over the millions of miles he drove. His CB handle was “Buffalo.”
He and his second wife, Barbara, had many adventures together on their ranch out of Toledo and then in their 5th wheel especially going to their “second home” in Baja, Mexico. Herb had a “heart of gold,” he loved to hunt and fish and did great oysters on the grill! He was very active in the Toledo Elks which brought out the best of his talents-serving others. He most recently lived in Lincoln City in an assisted living, where he had been nominated as an Ambassador and loved being the Bingo caller!
In January, Herb received news of a terminal diagnosis, but faced it with “I am right with the Lord, I have lived a good life and I am ready to go,” His family from afar was able to get “home” to see him which meant everything to him, before he left this world on February 15, 2020 at the age of 84. He is survived by his wife, Barb (her sons, Mark and Matt), his daughter, Koreen and sons, Kevin and Karlin, sisters, Alice, Fran and Bev, and brother, Rod and many grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great and grandnieces/nephews and many friends. We will all miss his giant spirit and heart.
A service will be held at the Toledo Elks at a later date. Donations could be made, in his honor, to the Toledo Elks.
