Pauline Caroline VanDenBogaard born on July 4, 1925 to Edward and Louise Rijken in Subang, Indonesia, on the Island of Java, passed on to our Lord on Thursday January 19 2017 at 1:48pm at her home in Toledo Oregon. She was proceeded in death by her husband Frank VanDenBogaard in 1994, her granddaughter Julie in 1989, her father Edward, mother Louise, brother Max, sister Eva, brothers Mathijs, and Eddy, and daughter Hedy.
Many people knew her as Lindy Bogaard, as she was a long standing part of the Toledo community with her restaurant, Lindy’s Delight, on East Highway 20. She was a parishioner of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Toledo. She is survived by her sons Robert (Bonnie) and Paul (Alyce), grandsons Sean (Nancy) and Mathijs (Rachel), great-granddaughter Wendy and great-grandson Oliver VanDenBogaard; and her brother Paul Rijken in Holland.
Lien, or Lindy grew up in Indonesia, on the island of Java. Her father and mother managed a rubber plantation of an English company. She survived World War II and the occupation of her country by the Japanese military. She experienced the hardships of war and the capture of her father and two brothers that were sent to Japan and forced to work in the coal mines. She met her husband Frank, a Dutch Marine stationed in New Guinea and on leave in Java, in 1950. Lindy was a single divorced parent at the time and managed a retreat with her daughter Hedy, who died from Polio and Meningitis in 1952. Then Robert was born, also in 1952. Indonesia claimed its independence from the Dutch Crown, and Lindy and Robert left Indonesia for Holland in 1954 to live with her parents, whom had left Indonesia earlier. Frank also came back to Holland and Paul was born there in 1955. They lived in Holland for 8 ½ years and then immigrated to the United States in 1962. They lived in the Portland area until 1964, when they moved to the coast and bought Banfield’s – Westshore Manor – which became Bogaard’s Banfield By the Sea, a famous landmark on the Oregon Coast, now known as Inn at Otter Crest.
Lindy loved to cook, she worked hard all her life and was passionate in her craft. She was well known locally with her mom and pop burger joint, Lindy’s Delight, here in Toledo.
Lindy was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church. She loved people, gardening, cooking adventure, and reading. She was an avid reader and loved western novels, voraciously reading hundreds as we made many trips to the Toledo library. Her favorite actors and shows were Walker Texas Ranger, Blue Bloods, NCIS, and Law & Order and she watched them daily, reruns and all. She lived a full life and travelled the world until her family settled in Lincoln County, Oregon. Although her life was hard at times, she was strong and fiercely independent, even more so after losing her husband. She knew pain but also love, and despite the ailments of her body, she never gave up until she took her last breath. She was our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, aunt, cousin and Matriarch of our family, she loved people and our Lord and now has gone home.
How much we loved her and miss her already.
