Maxene D Bahr

Maxene Dunlap Bahr passed away on August 6, 2021, at the age of 96. Maxene was born to parents Neal Dunlap and Hazel Hinshaw Dunlap on September 13, 1924, in the small northern California town of Gridley. Her early years were spent living on the California Duck Club, a 175 -acre private membership hunting club located at the base of the Sutter Buttes near Colusa. Her father managed the club, and her mother cooked for the 75 members. Maxene treasured memories of a carefree childhood in the great outdoors, swimming, boating and fishing with her three brothers and one sister. In 1938 her family relocated to Citrus Heights, California. She graduated from San Juan High School and married Jaye C Ezzell in 1944. Daughters Linda and Catherine were born in 1945 and 1949.

During her working years Maxene worked as executive and administrative assistants, mostly in the legal and law enforcement fields. She also worked in the public and private school sectors, and the Bremerton Police Department while Jaye was stationed there during the war. They lived in the Sacramento and surrounding gold rush areas until moving in 1959 to the San Fernando Valley of southern California.

Maxene was an avid horsewoman, and when she married Jack Bahr in 1963, they spent many active years as members of Equestrian Trails Inc., an organization dedicated to the preservation of permanent riding trails throughout the Southern California area. Jack also served in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse and Maxene was active in the Auxiliary.

They moved to Cottage Grove, Oregon in 1967 where they lived until retirement, after which she and Jack toured extensively throughout the United States in their motor home. In 1979 they moved to Newport near her daughters. Jack died in 1991 after a long battle with leukemia. Maxene joined Pacific Communities Hospital Hospice in 1997 and was passionate about her bereavement volunteer assignment. She also served on the Hospice Advisory Committee. She worked several years as a seasonal employee for the County Tax Department. She was a long- time member of the First Presbyterian Church where she served as the Sunday morning greeter and on various assignments. She loved horses, cats, the great outdoors, camping on beautiful central Oregon lakes, and spending time with her family and friends. She was a talented writer and voracious reader and crossword puzzle fan.

Maxene is survived by daughters Linda (Ray) Pitzer and Catherine (Dave) Mair; grandchildren Mary (Dave) Hansen, Ted (Breann) Pitzer, Jennifer (Shane) Turner, and Jack (Verity) Kent; great-daughter Sydney Hansen, and great-grandson Raymond Pitzer. In accordance with her wishes, there will be no public service. The family will have a private gathering.
